Are you struggling with the appearance of your teeth? Do you avoid smiling due to the way your teeth look? Cosmetic dentistry may be the perfect choice if you’ve been considering improving your smile because it offers a wide variety of procedures from teeth whitening to a complete smile makeover. The following is a list of procedures that require a cosmetic dental procedure:

Teeth whitening. Teeth whitening, or bleaching, can be done in your dentist’s office or at home with a system given to you by your dentist. Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are also available to you.

Bonding. Bonding improves teeth that are chipped, broken, cracked, stained or have gaps in between them by bonding a tooth-colored material to your tooth’s surface.

Veneers. Veneers are thin, custom made porcelain shells that cover the front of your teeth to disguise imperfections and discoloration.

Dental implants. Dental implants are a replacement tooth root and crown for severely damaged or missing teeth. They are extremely natural looking and seamlessly blend in to your existing smile.

Crown lengthening. This procedure can fix a “gummy” smile or an uneven gum line by removing the excess gum tissue to expose more of your tooth and give you the appearance of longer looking teeth.

Tooth reshaping. Tooth shaping, oftentimes combined with bonding, involves changing your teeth to improve their appearance by modifying and removing enamel.

Smile makeover. This procedure involves a comprehensive assessment of the overall appearance of your teeth and smile. Typically, several cosmetic dentistry procedures are required to restore the look of your smile.

There are many adults that have had a couple of decayed or missing teeth replaced. While replacing your missing teeth for aesthetic reasons is understandable, it’s important to have any missing teeth replaced for your oral health. Your teeth are meant to work together to help you chew, smile and speak. When you have missing teeth, these can be difficult to do. The loss of your back teeth may cause your mouth to shift and your face to appear older or sunken in. Fortunately, with the help of modern dentistry, missing teeth can be replaced. The following are some of the tooth replacement options that should be available to you by your dental care professional:

Dental implants. Many people opt for dental implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. The process of getting dental implants placed typically involves three phases that take place over several weeks, which is the main disadvantage.

Bridges. If your teeth can be fixed with a dental bridge, which is basically a dental appliance that is used to fill in the missing space. Unlike dental implants that are surgically placed and securely integrated into your jawbone, bridges rely on the neighboring teeth for support.

Dentures. Dentures are removable dental appliances that can replace a single tooth or a full set. Dentures usually have replacement teeth attached to a plastic base that matches the color of your gums and, depending on your case, are either partial dentures or full dentures.

So you’ve made the smart decision to replace your damaged or missing tooth with a dental implant, but now you’re wondering how to go about dental implant aftercare. After getting a dental implant surgically installed it’s extremely important for you to take proper care of it. Dental implants require a clean environment to heal properly and most of the success of the implant ultimately depends on you. The following list includes a few tips on how to properly care for your new dental implant:

  • Do Not Bother- Directly after getting your dental implants you should avoid bothering the affected area as much as possible. Agitating your dental implant can slow down the healing process and could potentially leading to additional problems.
  • Ice Affected Area- Don’t worry if a part of your face swells over the first few days, it’s perfectly normal. To reduce the swelling you can apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas to the affected area. Apply the ice pack as frequently as possible the first 24 hours with 20 minutes breaks in between icing.
  • Consume carefully- Avoid swishing liquids around your mouth for the first week after your procedure. When it comes to eating, make sure that you start off with softer foods, such as soups, for the first 2 weeks. When you do eat try avoiding the dental implant as much as possible. Also, do not drink anything hot immediately after the procedure.
  • Keep it Clean- In order for your dental implants to heal properly you need to keep the affected area as clean as possible. It’s recommended to rinse with a salt water solution at least 4-5 times a day. Don’t forget to brush your teeth as normal with a soft bristle toothbrush and to brush carefully around the dental implant.
  • Exercise- Refrain from any physical activity for the first week after your implant surgery since activity can cause unnecessary bleeding. If any of your daily routines do cause bleeding reduce your level of activity.

Once your dental implant has fully healed you must care for it just as you would your natural teeth by flossing and brushing regularly. Your dental implant will eventually act and feel just like a natural tooth would, and with proper care your implant could last a lifetime.
